Scripture:
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV)
Reflection:
When Jesus sat down at the right hand of God, it signaled something revolutionary: the work of salvation is finished. The Old Testament priests never sat down because they were never done offering sacrifices. But Jesus sat down because there's nothing left to do. Yet many Christians still live like those standing priests—constantly trying to earn God's acceptance through religious performance, good deeds, or moral effort. It's exhausting because it was never meant to be your job. Your salvation is purely the grace and gift of God. Good works flow from salvation, not to salvation. We don't work for our salvation; we work because of our salvation. Christ works in and through us as the result of our new life in Him.
Prayer:
Father, forgive me for the ways I've tried to earn what You've freely given. I confess that I sometimes live as though my acceptance depends on my performance. Help me rest in Christ's finished work rather than my own efforts. Teach me the difference between working from a place of rest versus working from a place of anxiety. Let my good works flow naturally from the overflow of Your grace working in me, not from a desperate attempt to prove myself worthy. Amen.
Action:
Today, pay attention to your motivations. When you serve, give, pray, or engage in any "religious" activity, pause and ask yourself: "Am I doing this to earn God's love or because I already have it?" If you catch yourself striving to prove yourself, stop and consciously rest in Christ's finished work. Thank Him that you're already fully accepted. Then choose to serve from that place of security rather than insecurity.
