Scripture:
"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." (Matthew 6:33 ESV)
"Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine." (Proverbs 3:9-10 ESV)
Reflection:
God doesn't just want a portion of our lives—He wants first place. The Law of First Things isn't about God being greedy; it's about God being worthy. When we give Him the first and best of what we have, we're making a declaration: "God, You are more important than my security, my comfort, my plans." This principle appears throughout Scripture—the firstborn, the firstfruits, the first day of the week. It's a pattern that reveals God's heart: He wants to be our priority, not our afterthought. When we seek Him first, when we honor Him with our first and best, we position ourselves to receive His blessing and provision. It's not a formula for getting rich; it's a pathway to experiencing God's faithfulness.
Prayer:
Father, forgive me for the times I've given You my leftovers instead of my first and best. I want to seek Your kingdom first in every area of my life. Help me to trust that when I put You first, You will provide everything I need. Give me the faith to honor You with the firstfruits of all You've given me, knowing that You are faithful to Your promises. Amen.
Action:
Examine your current budget or spending patterns. What gets paid first each month? What receives your best time, energy, and resources? Make a practical plan to put God first financially. If you're not currently tithing, calculate what 10% of your income would be and determine how you can begin giving the first portion to God's work.
