Scripture:
1 Timothy 6:17-19
"Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life."
Reflection:
The sermon reminded us that the only thing we take to heaven is people—people we've invested in, shared Christ with, and helped along their journey of faith. Everything else stays behind. Paul's instruction to Timothy reveals God's heart: He wants us to enjoy His blessings, but not to trust in them. Instead, we're called to be "rich in good works"—investing our resources, time, and energy in what has eternal value. When we support missions, serve in our local church, show generosity to those in need, and invest in discipleship, we're not just doing good deeds—we're literally transferring our treasure from earth to heaven. We're building a "good foundation for the time to come."
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the resources You've entrusted to me. Help me to hold them loosely and to use them wisely for eternal purposes. I don't want to arrive in heaven empty-handed, having spent my life accumulating things that couldn't follow me there. Show me specific ways I can invest in people and in Your kingdom this week. Make me rich in good works, generous in spirit, and willing to share what You've given me. Let my life count for eternity. Amen.
Action:
Make a specific investment in eternity this week. Choose one of these actions: (1) Financially support a missionary or ministry that's reaching people with the gospel; (2) Invite someone to church or share your faith story with a friend or coworker; (3) Volunteer to serve in a ministry at your church that invests in people (children's ministry, youth, small groups, outreach, etc.); (4) Mentor or disciple someone who's younger in the faith; (5) Give sacrificially to meet a specific need in someone's life. Don't just think about it—take action today and store up treasure in heaven.
