Blessing Our Community

       Scripture:
Jeremiah 29:7
"But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare."

  Reflection:

This verse is radically countercultural. God told the Israelites to pray for and seek the prosperity of Babylon—a pagan nation that had conquered them! They didn't want to be there, yet God commanded them to bless it. Why? Because God's purposes often work through unexpected means, and our blessing is tied to the blessing of those around us.
We can easily fall into an "us versus them" mentality with our community, complaining about the culture, the politics, the moral decline. But God calls us to a different posture: active blessing. We're not called to isolate ourselves in a Christian bubble but to engage our community with the love of Christ, praying for its welfare and working toward its flourishing.
When we bless our community through acts of service, genuine relationships, and prayer, we create opportunities for people to encounter Jesus. The question isn't whether our community deserves our blessing, but whether we'll be obedient to God's call to be His representatives.

  Prayer:

Father, forgive me for the times I've complained about my community rather than prayed for it. Change my heart toward the people around me, help me see them as You see them, loved and valuable. Give me creative ways to bless my community this week. Show me how to be salt and light, bringing Your flavor and illumination to the darkness. Help me remember that in my community's welfare, I will find my own. Amen.

  Action:

Pray specifically for your community today. Your neighborhood, local schools, government leaders, and businesses. Then take one practical action to bless your community: volunteer at a local organization, support a local business, or perform an act of kindness for a neighbor. Let them know you're from Victory Family Church and that you're blessed to be part of this community.
